Statistical analysis shows a significant improvement in the appearance of the skin after as little as two weeks and that this improvement is maintained for the duration of the trails. Furthermore, anecdotal evidence confirms that improvements in the appearance of the skin are maintained even after use of Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil is discontinued. Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil may be used on an ongoing basis. Many people continue to use it for its moisturizing and skin-nourishing properties, making it a part of their daily skincare routine.

Composition

Vitamin A demonstrates skin renewing properties. It increases the thickness of the epidermis, particularly in mature skin types, and promotes the formation of new collagen. Vitamin A improves the appearance of UV-damaged skin, by helping to increase elasticity and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Vitamin Α and pregnancy: Women are usually recommended to limit vitamin A nutritional supplements during pregnancy and therefore may have concerns around using skincare products with vitamin A.
Any substance applied to the skin is only harmful if it is present at levels above its toxicological threshold. Because the skin provides a significant barrier to penetration, only a fraction of topically applied vitamin A enters the body. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has evaluated vitamin A and its esters, when used as a cosmetic ingredient. The SCCS opinion is that the use of vitamin A in body lotions, up to the maximum concentration of 0.05% of retinol equivalent, is safe. Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil includes vitamin A in its formulation at well below this maximum allowable concentration for a body lotion. Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil can be used safely throughout pregnancy. By including vitamin A at a low level, Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil provides pregnant women with the benefits of vitamin A without any safety risk.

Vitamin E has been scientifically proven to have several benefits to the skin. The primary benefit is as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are essential in helping to reduce free radicals which attack healthy cells and cause skin damage and premature ageing. Vitamin E also increases the moisture content of the epidermis, making it feel softer and smoother. It mitigates against some of the effects of sunburn in that it reduces the number of damaged cells found after skin has been exposed to UV radiation. It has also been shown to have positive effects on the wound healing process.

Chamomile oil is derived from the flowers of the Anthemis nobilis, or Roman Chamomile, plant. The INCI name is Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil. Chamomile oil is an anti-inflammatory, providing soothing calming benefits to the skin. It is effective where the skin is stressed by both internal and external physiological conditions.

Lavender oil is the natural plan t oil derived from the flowers of the Lavandula angustifolia plant. The INCI name is Lavandula Angustifolia Oil. Lavender oil has multiple benefits for the skin. It is known to have skin conditioning properties such as improved firmness, smoothness and complexion. It provides calming and soothing benefits coupled with mild astringency which cleans the skin by constricting the pores, resulting in a tingling sensation. It is also a natural antiseptic with the ability to kill many common bacterial species

Rosemary oil is obtained by distilling the stems and leaves of the Rosmarinus officinalis plant. The INCI name is Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil. Rosemary oil is used as a skin conditioning agent because of its soothing properties and mild antiseptic capability.
Rosemary Oil and Pregnancy: Rosemary oil in high concentrations has been found to be an emmenagogue, meaning it has the ability to provoke menstruation and possibly induce early labor. This is why aromatherapists and herbalists who use rosemary oil in high concentrations, recommend against using it during pregnancy. However the concentration of rosemary oil in Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil is very low making it suitable for use during pregnancy.

Calendula oil is an extract derived from blossoms of the marigold (Calendula officinalis) plant. The INCI name for the calendula extract is Calendula Officinalis Extract. Calendula oil has cell regenerative effects and is suitable for the treatment of sensitive, damaged or sunburnt skin. Calendula extract has also been used to combat minor skin infections, rashes and superficial irritation.

PurCellin Oil™ is a mixture of two ingredients. Their INCI names are Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate and Isopropyl Myristate. Purcellin Oil™ reduces the thickness of the Bio-Oil® Skincare Oil formulation, making it readily absorbed. This assists with the delivery of key ingredients , i.e. vitamins A and E, and calendula, lavender rosemary and chamomile oils. PurCellin Oil™ further exhibits spreading properties on the skin, producing a thin, protective film which is neither sticky nor greasy. It acts as an emollient, making the skin soft smooth and supple. It also assists in maintaining the natural water vapor permeability of the skin, thus allowing it to breathe properly and maintain its normal physiology.
